World Wetlands Day, celebrated worldwide on February 2 since 1997, commemorates the 1971 signing of an intergovernmental treaty called the Ramsar Convention, held in Ramsar, Iran. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary was designated a” Wetland of International Importance” by the Ramsar Convention in 2010; to-date, there are 2,066 Ramsar designated wetlands in 163 countries.
